It is true tliat I had letters of introduction to many of the leading merchants and bankers, and we well knew that the same warm-hearted hospitahty, which we had met mth in other parts of America, would be extended to us here ; but I did not expect, that on stepping on shore, I should be surrounded by a crowd of ancient Cymri, some well-remembered faces, members of my old corps, and others, and that I should receive a Welslnnan's hearty welcome, accom- panied by a bouqet of the sweetest flowers... of this flowery land, a proof of kmd forethought of that which would most rejoice my gentle partner's heart in this distant region.
It is difiicult to say how deeply I felt the kmdness of my old friends and neighbours, and still more so when a few days afterwards a deputation of 14 Glamorganshire and Swansea men, called on me in the name of the Welsh residents of San Francisco (between 400 and 500 in number) and presented me with a beautiful and costly gold-headed cane, suitably inscribed. The cane itself is made of Cali- fornian u'on wood — it has a crutch handle of pure gold, at each end of which is a medalHon of gold quartz ; the inner medallion opens and displays a 134 A TOUR IN NORTH AMERICA.
