Long.) A painting oi great merit, and well deserving purchase by the Anthropological Society. It becomes a question of extreme interest with me, as I examine this remarkable picture, how far the intensely subtle observation of physical character and expression which rendered the painting of it possible, necessitates the isolation of the artist's thoughts from subjects of intel- lectual interest, or moral beauty.
