Before that the Methodists had wor- shipped in a secluded spot on the Sweden road, just west of Mutiny corner. Their meeting house was HISTORY OF WATERFORD 67 a low wooden structure, with a rather flat roof, ifcsexteriorunclapboarded, blackened and weather- beaten; its interior cheerless and bare, with hard plank benches, no ado
...rnment of any kind, and no conveniences for a choir. In this uncomfortable house the hardy, devout worshippers had gathered from far and near for many long years. But there grew up a party that wanted something better, a building more centrally located, in the village, with modern conveniences, and attractions. They con- tended that if the ordinances of religion were to reach the masses, the house of worship should be conveniently located, that it should be made with- in and without attractive to the eye, that it should be comfortable for the attendants, and that it should provide, to gratify the ear of the worship- pers, suitable accommodations for vocal and in- strumental music.
