What reading level is Notes On the Scots Darien Expedition book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

FRANCIS BORELAND. 39 of this last expedition were buried in Caledonia ; many died when being taken on board, and the state of the survivors was such that great numbers died of hardship whilst at sea. On the nth April 1700, the embarkation was completed, and this portion of the expedition, a broken-hearted band, abandoned the country after a stay of only four months and twelve days. The four ships that had come from Scotland in the last expedition, and three others, formed the fleet that left Ca...ledonia, but misfortune after mis- fortune followed their steps. Malignant fevers and fluxes swept off great numbers, and from the " Rising Sun" alone they would sometimes bury eight in one morning. Mr. Boreland says that on this vessel the sick were crowded together like hogs in a sty, poisoning each other, and with no sustenance but spoiled oatmeal and water. Under such circum- stances his services could hardly be rendered, and he mourns his powerlessness. One ship was so leaky that she had to be run into Carthagena, and was there sold to the Spaniards ; another was wrecked near to Jamaica, and between Caledonia and Jamaica, in the space of one month, it is supposed that two hundred and fifty men died of disease, and were buried at sea from the different vessels.
