Rapid and irregular heart action and feeling of suffocation are usually the most annoying symptoms. There may also be disturbances of digestion, anaemia, loss of weight, fine muscular tremors of the hands and profuse perspiration. The thyroid gland may show varying degrees of enlargement and the exophthalmus may be slight or marked. A white line of sclera between the iris and the upper lid which shows when the eyes are moved in a downward direction is usually noticeable.

UREMIA This is a toxic condition caused by the presence in the blood of constituents which normally are eliminated by the kidneys. These substances when retained in the circula- tion act deleteriously on the nervous system.
Physical symptoms. Headache, nausea, vomiting, dysp- noea without exertion and often so great the patient can- not lie down, arhythmical or Cheyne-Stokes respirations, edema of the extremities, twitching of the muscles and con- vulsions may indicate this condition.
