This gliding down throws the lumbar vertebrae into the cavity of the pelvis, producing virtually a new and false promontory in front of, and below, the true one ; it not only contracts the conjugate diameter, but by partly filling the pelvis, prevents the uterus and child from entering. Some of the cases appear to have been congenital ; but in others certainly the condition SKELETON-DEFORMITIES. 285 arose after maturity. It was first described by Kilian. I have discussed the subject in some det...ail in the " Obstetrical Transactions," vol. vi. The general obstetric effect is similar to that produced by a large osteosarcoma in the pelvis. Most of the cases required the Csesarian section.
The illustration, Fig. 102, is taken from "Kilian. It is called the " Prague Pelvis." The original is in the Prague Museum.* In another specimen described by Kilian, the virtual conjugate starts from the second lumbar vertebra, the third, fourth, and fifth having all sunk into the pelvis.
