If the period of pregnancy is... not to be one of sacrifice on the part of the mother for the fetus, it is evident that her weight must increase by at least that much during the nine months. The patient should be weighed at intervals, in order that it may be determined whether she is gaining satisfactorily. A gain of more than the minimum of 15 pounds is to be desired, because it represents so much new tissue held in the body as a reserve against the added demands of the lactation period.
