The reduction of these posts was the period of the enlistment of our troops. I was at a great loss at this time to de termine how to act, and how far I might venture to strain my au thority. I had the greater part of our [troops] reenlistcd on a different establishment commissioned French officers in the country to command a company of the young inhabitants; established n garrison at Ca- hokia, commanded by Captain Bowman, and another at Kaskaskia, commanded by Captain Williams. Post Vincennes remained in the situation as mentioned. Colonel William Linn, who had ac companied us a volunteer, took charge of u party that was to be discharged on their arrival at the falls, and orders were sent for the removal of that post to the main-land.
