Black and E. S. Narvell, A. A. D. C. S on my staff. During the engagement they each displayed cool courage and excellent skill. For their prompt action in conveying orders upon the tield, and skill exhibited in posting troops, I cannot too highly commend them. They also, upon the march, during the e...ntire campaign, deserve commendation for their efficiency in the movements of troops.

Soon after the return of the army from the Mine Run campaign, the brigade went into winter quarters about two miles south of Brandy Station, on the east side of the railroad, and on the plantation owned by John Minor Botts. The quarters occupied had been constructed, in the main, by the rebels prior to the 8th of November, 1863.
