Their attitude in this re- spect is well summed up by an old verse : "if the mind be true, without prayer, God will guard us. " XIV. CONCLUSION. The arrival of Commodore Perry of the United States navy at Uraga, on the 13th of July 1853, resulted in the opening of Japan, and thus marked the dawn of a new era in its history.
