He has shown that in intestinal obstruction suddenly produced, the rectum retains its natural power of contraction, and will be found to be empty ; if the disease be of gradual formation, that it is more patulous and readily yields to injections. To a certain extent this is the case, but the symptom is one upon which we cannot rely.
