What then may it not have been for the men of that time ! On the other hand Chris- tianity is a jioison for young barbaric nations. To plant, for instance, the doctrine of sin and damnation in the souls of the old Germans, these heroic, childish and bestial souls, what was it but to poison them? The consequence of all this was a formid- able fermentation, and a chemical decomposition, a disorder of feelings and of decision, a pressure and an exuberance of the most dangerous things ; and later a thorough weakening of those barbaric na- tions.
