We can make no more than a strong guess, and it is this : that the patients whom we have now described are for some reasons probably of inherent constitution more liable than others to break-down of the functions of the medulla oblongata, and that the phenomena observed are in fact the result of the influence of haemorrhage 56 ON THE USES OF WINES upon the vagus and vaso-motorial centres which the medulla contains, the rest of the nervous centres remaining comparatively unaffected.
