Heretofore the business of distributing, which means the marketing of pictures, has been carried on almost ex- clusively from New York.
To my mind, there existed a gap between producers and the market which should have been bridged. New York was too far from Los Angeles. There seemed no logical reason why films ...should not be distributed from Los Angeles. There appeared to me to be many convincing reasons why there should be a distributing center here, not the least of which was the fact that the manufacturer would be in close touch with the man who was selling his product.
This was not merely a theory on my part. I had been associated with Sol Lesser in the marketing of "The Spoil- ers, " "Hearts of the World, " "Yankee Doodle in Berlin/' "The Ne'er Do Well, " "Civilization, " "20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea, " "Intolerance, " "The Garden of Allah, " "Peck's Bad Boy, " and numerous other big feature productions.
