As the Western and Middle Pjecincts of Watertown became more inhabited, the people living there began to object to going so far to Church, and a strong effort was made to have the building removed to a more con- venient place, nearer the middle of the Town, which caused a good deal of feeling in the Church.
In 1694 the inhabitants of the Farmers Precinct, to the number of one hundred and eighteen, protested at being obliged to go so far from home to Church. There was a compromise made, and Janu...ary 9, 1695, these men agreed to build for themselves what was called the Farmers Meeting House, a building thirty feet square, which was erected a little to the west of our present flag pole. February, 1697, these Farmers were exempted from ministerial rates in the Town, probably because their Meeting House was so far along that they could and did use it for Sunday services. It was not, however, entirely completed till about the year 1709 ; almost fifteen years having been consumed in its building.
