Acid chlorides and also halogen alkyls, acting on sodium acetoacetic... ester, produce mainly the C-acyl compounds (described later among the diketo-carboxylic esters). Some O-acyl ester is also formed, which can be obtained as a main product, by the action of acid chlorides on acetoacetic ester in the presence of pyridine. The O-acyl esters are insoluble in alkalis, whilst the C-acyl esters are soluble, thus providing an easy method of separation. When heated with alkalis (potassium carbonate, sodium acetoacetic ester, etc. ), the O-acyl esters are transformed into C-acyl esters.
