He received the dean of Canterbury, the messenger of the archbishop of Canterbury, graciously, but he issued a proclamation against any more Puritan peti- tions. It was evident that he intended to maintain the established order of the Church of England, and not accommodate it to the ideas of the powerful party within its borders.
