And though many statesmen in the North recognized the right, it was overwhelmed and sunk out of view by the long continued agitation of the slav- ery issue, by the idea of "preserving the life of the nation, " by the* announcement in terrorem of the "irrepressible conflict between free and sliave labor, and that all of the States must be either free or slave States, " and by numerous other antagonisms.
