ELSON DINOLEY, Jr. , of Lewiston, who rej^resents the Second Congressional Dis- trict of Maine in the Congress of the United States, was born in Durham, Andros- coggin County, Maine, February 15th, 1832. He was a member of the State House of Representa-, tives in 1862, '63, '64, '65, '68 and '73, serving as Speaker of the House during the sessions of 1863 and '64. He was Governor of Maine in 1874 and '75. In 1874 Bates College conferred on him the degree of Doc- tor of Laws.
He was a Delegate to the National Bej^ublican Con- vention in 1876. At a sj^ecial election, the 12th of September, 1881, he was elected, as a Republican, to fill a vacancy in the House of Representatives of the Forty- seventh Congress, caused by the election of Hon.
