It was soon filled with the other members of the bareem, and a number of black slave-girls, who came to in- spect us, and stare wonderingly at us. These beautiful old palaces show what Damas- cus must have been in its halcyon days. Now it is only a wreck of its former self, but even at the present time, in spite of dirt, ruin, and decay, there are beautiful bits of architecture and carv- ings peering out from among the houses and bazaars : old Moorish archways and doorways, lovely courtyards, and fountains, and ancient mosques, giving some idea of Oriental taste and magnificence in bygone ages.
