Now, when the necessity arises, working men will sit up all night with a sick mate, and at six in the morning retire, not to sleep, but to work. But the shopmates of a man doing such a kindness would never dream of speaking of the " devotion " of Jim or Jack So-and-so ; they would simply say that he was what a mate ought to be. How men holding this view con- trasted this picture and that, the simple natural act with the adulatory high-flown heading, may be easily under- stood. Their comments up...on the difierence were the re- verse of complimentary. Some of them extended to the Duke as well as the paper, and very warmly expressed the sentiment that if that was the royal idea of devotion, the commentators were happy to think that their feelings were not constituted upon a royal model. That such remarks did injustice to royalty in general, and the Duke of Edinburgh in particular, there can be no doubt. With- out knowing anything more of the Duke than that he is a 332 OUR NEW MASTERS.
young man and a sailor, we will venture confidently to aflSrm that he would not have spoken of his simple act of brotherliness as " devotion, " and we feel but little less confidence in expressing a belief that, did he think the matter worthy of a moment's consideration, he would despise the toadying scribe who had so written of it.
