These countries were all, at this period, sub- ject to the Romans ; and they embraced the por- tions of the earth which were most distinguished for civilization, arts, and literature ; but the inhab- itants were all, with the exception of the Jews, pagan idolaters, commonly styled in the Bible Gentiles.
