Successful and poptdar. — It is scarcely necessary to observe that these epithets are warranted by the appearance of four editions between the years 1597 and 1615, and the play seems to have been a favourite with Bodenham, who introduces a large number of quotations from it in his Belvedere, 1600. It is also in the list of Shakespearean dramas given by Meres in 1598, but other early notices, where the authorship is not distinctly to be inferred, may relate to some of the plays on the same reign... which were not the composition of the great dramatist The copyright entry of the first impression is here given in facsimile.
No. 283. Was omitted. — The general context shows that the deposition scene belongs to the play as it was originally written, and that it could not have been a subsequent addition. Its omission in the first and second impressions excludes the probability of Lord Bacon having referred to Shakespeare's drama when he wrote, in his charge against Oliver St John, — " and for your comparison with Richard the Second, I see you follow the example of them that brought him upon the stage, and into print, in Queen Elizabeth's time"; the allusions here being almost certainly to the insurrection stage-performance and Hayward's Life of Henry IV.
