Germany had a 99-year lease, granted in 1898, of KiaorChau, including the bay of the same name, its islands, and the north and south tongues of land at the mouth of the harbor. The extent of this is 193 square miles. In view of the possessions held, Great Britain has a sphere of influence in the Yangtze Valley and Germany a similar area of about 2, 750 miles, but now extended to the whole of th- Province of Shantung.
