On the other hand, under natural conditions only a comparatively small percentage of all persons who are bitten by rabid dogs develop rabies. Pasteur had found that bites about the face and neck were especially fatal and that practically all untreated cases of this kind developed the disease.
On July 6th, 1885, an Alsatian boy, Joseph Meister, was brought by his parents to Pasteur for treatment. The boy had been very badly bitten about the face and hands and had been untreated.
