But even this doctrine of the heavenly pre-existence of Christ has its starting-point in a theory of the Alexandrian PAUL'S THEOLOGY. 163 philosophy of religion — namely, in its distinction be- tween the ideal heavenly man who is immediately created after God's image, and the earthly man who is the sensibly dimmed and sensually differentiated like- ness of that image. This theory, resting on the Pla- tonic idealism, appears even before Paul to have had an influence upon the rabbinical interpretation of Scripture, seeing that they read out of the narrative of the creation in Genesis i.
