According to Simmel, for example, the conflict of duties arises, as an essential moment in the progress of -ethical monism, in either of two ways : first, when a higher principle comes down from without, as it were, upon two or more contiguous and hitherto concord- ant classes of duties and forces a choice between them ; or else, second, when the more internal development of two related duties forces them further and further apart until they become antagonistic.
