As an effect due to the action of ions, we may again refer to the production of artificial parthenogenesis. The ova of chaetopterus, for example, undergo parthenogenic develop- ment under the influence of small quantities of potassium ion, i. E. , addition of any potassium salt causes the development of the eggs; but other salts, which do not yield potassium ion, are without influence. Similarly, the ova of the star- fish can be caused to undergo parthenogenic development by the hydrogen ion by the addition, therefore, of any acid but not by potassium ion.
