The old form is uniformly Haltoun, that is, the town of the hall or manor-house. In this county the Ha' or Ha'-house is also used to distinguish a farmer's house from a crofter's, but I think there is a humorous element in this use of the term. Occasionally Haltoun and Hiltoun appear in the old writings, probably in error, as applying to the same place.
