Scientific investiga- tion and practical experience led to a number of con- tradictory points, so that this subject had still to be regarded as an unsolved problem. According to the statements found in the most re- cent literature on hydraulic gypsum (floor-gypsum, flooring-plaster), this modification of calcined gypsum may be briefly summed up to be an anhydrite of gyp- sum, calcium sulphate, which "under the microscope in nitric acid shows the needle-crystals of the half- hydrate, " which "ha...s the same composition as the soluble anhydrite and therefore must be regarded as an isomorphous modification of it, " which, further- more, "forms between the temperatures of 400 and 600 centigrade" and "possesses the remarkable ability not to assume the temperature of its surroundings, if the latter surpasses 600 centigrade" and which ulti- mately "dissolves in the water with which it is mixed in the same manner as plaster of Paris, though more slowly, and crystallizes as di-hydrate.
