35. Cracked : before 1820, " smack'd." 38-40. Before 1820 1. 40 was " And foaming like a mountain cata- ract," rhyming with "glorious act" in 1. 38. Perhaps Wordsworth thought 1. 40 an exaggeration ; no doubt he was glad to avoid " act " so soon after " cracked." 42. Before 1820 : " His nose half-touch'd." " Nostril " is more cor- rect in speaking of a hart.
