Walter Espec, says the historian of Rievaulx, was "a man of stature passing tall, but of limbs well proportioned, and which were well fitted to his great height. He had his hair still black, though he was old and full of days ; his beard was long and flowing, his forehead wide and noble, his eyes large and piercing, his face broad but well-featured, and his voice like the sound of a ti-umpet, setting off his natural eloquence of his speech with a kind of majesty of sound.
