Mr. Asquith used to be reproached with being a trimimer. Perhaps he is, in tactics ; but his convictions are viscous rather than fluid, and he has the greatest difficulty in modifying them. His Irish policy, for example, is a mere ghost of the Gladstonian controversies and stands in no sort of relation with changed political conditions.
