Under these circumstances it was quite natural to turn to the army, and to canvass the claims of Gen. Grant. The idea of his nomination was exceedingly dis- tasteful to me. His nom- ination, however, was only secured by cautious and timely diplomacy, and potent appeals to his sordid- ness, in the shape of assurances that he should have the office for a second term.
