Some Cantons refused to obey; but the menaces of the " Holy Alliance, " sup- ported by the army which entered the Swiss territory, soon compelled them to accept a constitution which was a continual source of all the internal struggles which troubled Switzerland up to 1848, in which year the Swiss succeeded in altering that constitution in spite of the threatenings of Austria, Prussia, and Russia.
