THE subject of this plate may yet be traced on the wall of a house situated in a street leading from the north end of the Forum towards the habitation of a peasant named Vitiello, above the tavern. Similar altars are seen in other parts of the city, but none so perfectly preserved as this when first discovered. The basso relievo seems to have represented a sacrifice, but being of stucco, no mo
...re was visible, on the day of the exca- vation, than is here represented. At present, scarcely any vestige of the figures remains. The eagle above seems to indicate Jupiter as the deity worshipped at this spot by those who passed the altar. Certain divinities by the roadside seem, however, to have been termed Viales Dii. Nearly oppo. Site this, says the Canonico lorio, was found the only Greek inscription of consequence at Pompeii, in a house where there was a pedestal of Egyptian stone. The letters, though not of a very good time, are yet among the best and clearest at Pompeii.
