The " greater facilities " theory has one capital defect. It applies quite as much to the production of gold as it does to the production of other com- modities. Since 1873 there have been many improved facilities for mining gold, fresh mines have been opened up and better methods of extracting the ore employed, yet the value of gold in purchas- ing power has been continuously rising. The following table, compiled by Sir Guilford Molesworth, shows how, prior to 1873, prices rose with the increased output of commodities, and how after that date, although the previous rate of expan- sion in the production of commodities was not main- tained, prices nevertheless fell away.
