In 1847 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of the State of New- York, and in the year fol- lowing was elected Governor of the State for two years. He declined are-election in 1850, and in 1851 was elected to the Senate of the United States for the full term of six years.

The next year he declined a re-election, and returned to the practice of his profession. In 1839 he was elected to the State Senate. In the winter of 1841, he was chosen United States Senator for six years, and first took his seat on the 4th of March, 1841.
