This may be experienced by holding the eye near a large piece of scarlet cloth lying in the sun, I therefore employ a spectroscope of considerable power, so that not more than one-tenth part of the spectrum is visible at one time. The eyepiece must be one having a wide field of view, and the spectrum, instead of occupying a narrow ribbon in the middle of the field, must fill it from top to bottom as well as from side to side.
