For months Paris had been bombarded — during the day by the long-range guns; at night by Gothas and other murderous aeroplanes, which drove Paris 122 PAEIS m DANGER to the cellars. Mucli damage was wrought and war insurance companies were doing big business. The city was greatly damaged during that spring and autumn. One shudders to think what might have happened had the enemy been able to get nearer and make even more determined attacks on the city, as they threatened to do. As it was, shells ...and bombs fell in the very heart of Paris — there was not a quarter and scarcely a street that escaped. Then the great German offensive began — the of- fensive of despair, that was to be their last effort. To those in the city the enemy seemed as formidable as ever. Every one knew what they had done and could still do. At any rate, they were again rush- ing on to the capital, and towns which had been re- captured had again fallen to the tenemy. Once more the capital was in great danger, and once more it began to empty.
