It must have seemed a great loss to the New Eng- land town whence he came, that such a young man as Mr. Fisher was. Should leave it for the undeveloped West; but God had far greater work for him here than he could have done in his early home. So, again, it seemed a serious loss for Beloit that his only son, born and reared in Beloit, should not remain a citizen of this good town, but should "paddle his canoe'' down- stream toward yonder city, whose ceaseless activities and boundless expansion a...re among the wonders of the Avorld. Yet, if he had remained among us, he could not have returned to us, the honored guest of this oc- casion; and he might not have had the ability, how- ever great his good will, to present to us this wonderful collection, which from henceforth becomes so unique a portion of the College's historical and artistic endow- ment. So true is it that when God puts men forth upon the stream of life, he has nobler ends in view than we are apt to dream of.
32 Reverently and gladly we receive this collection and place it among the College's treasures.
