The remains of monuments and other ves- tiges of art which are now found in that seftion were owing, it is said, to the skill of Tammany. In his youth he was famed for his exploits as a hunter and warrior, and, from beyond the Father of Waters to the Great Salt Lake, his deeds were recounted at every council fire. He waged for many years a war with his mortal enemy, the Evil Sjoirit, and during this time his prowess and courage exceeded, if possible, all that is related in ancient story and song of the Grecian Hercules.
