Naught could the Roman galleys' shock sustain, Our barks fell piecemeal, scatter'd o'er the main Before their ponderous beaks. One crash, no more, One yell of wild despair, and all is o'er. Red roll the billows litter'd with the wreck, And drowning forms, late guardians of the deck.
