Agreeably to a hint furnished by chap. 1 : 2, the former may be considered as the earlier part of the prophet's ministry. This comes to the contents of the next. In this the people are charged with outward sins. In the first part of the book, the Assyrians are not mentioned by name, but in the subsequent chapters they are named. In each of these three main sections of the book are three Messianic passages, making the ends of as many subdivisions. Those in the first section occur at the close of each of the first three chap- ters. In the second section are three promissory passages, 6 : 1-3 ; 11 : 8-11 ; 14 : 1-9. The passages are not only of in- creasing length, but are of growing fullness and power.
