(i). A boy who is not only in the highest class of his school, but has also passed the ' Abiturienten^Examen^ (which answers pretty nearly to our Higher Oxford and Cambridge Certificates) may pass into the Army without further examination. About one third of the whole pass in this way.
( ii ). The other two thirds must prove that they have been moved up into the highest class at their school before they are allowed to proceed any further. Having proved this, they are ad- mitted to an examinatio...n in the ordinary school subjects which passes them into the Army — the Fdhnrichs^Examen. A large proportion of these candidates (perhaps thirty-three per cent.) come from the Kadetten-Corps at Lichterfelde, a military boarding-school which combines the or- dinary " Modem Side " schooling with a con- siderable amount of miKtary drill. This exam- ination is practically only qualifying, since there are not too many candidates for the vacancies.
