This change of one form of closely relatedtissue into another is called _metaplasia_. .. .
"When differentiation h...as advanced so that such distinct types of tissuehave been formed as connective tissue, epithelium, muscle, nerve, _thesedo not again merge through metaplasia. There is no evidence thatmesoblastic tissues can be converted into those of the epiblastic orhypoblastic type, or vice versa_.
