What reading level is Quæro book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Spencer calls " persistent energy/' and which stands behind the phenomena of the universe. This may well be ' unknowable,' in the sense of incomprehensible, inscrutable ; but, since we know (i. e. infer) its existence, and know (also by inference) that the phenomena of the universe are manifestations of this * unknowable,' we can scarcely be said to be in complete ignorance. As scientists tell us, we are in precisely the same predica- ment with respect to matter, i. ^., we know (infer) its exis...tence from certain phenomena.
An anthropic mode of knowledge, no doubt, but our only one and therefore valuable. To find the completely * unknowing ' animal, we have to descend below the human level. We shall seek it in vain in that intellectual caste Digitized by Google IS EVOLUTION FOWSXy OB MANDATE ? 39 which has adopted the cognomen of ^Agnostic/ An ox is a perfect agnostic, a man is not, and can not be. (Our means and mode of know- ledge are more fully discussed in the next chapter.)
