During the two years of warfare the life of the royal family had proceeded in its usual quiet and domestic way.

Their youth was a far happier one than that of the Queen had been, for hers was a solitary childhood, cut off as she was from all playmates of the same age, while they were numerous enough to form a good-sized party.
