There is no doubt that several pre-Norman churches once occupied the sites upon which the present-day churches of the county stand. This is notably the case where the buildings were first dedicated to Welsh saints, e. G. Glas- cwm (St David), St Harmon's (St Garmon), Llanbister (St Cynllo), Llanbadarn Fawr (St Padarn), etc.
The churches of Glascwm and St Harmon's are specifically mentioned by Giraldus Cambrensis in his well-known Itinerary, and are there spoken of as old sanctuaries, around whi...ch several observances had in the course of time become recognised as customs. Now as Giraldus wrote this about the year 1188, i. E. When the Norman or Romanesque Period was drawing to a close, it is almost certain that the original churches of these places were pre-Norman. There is an undoubted relic of the same period within half a mile of the present Llanelwedd church, where the foundations of the ancient Celtic church, dedicated to St Elwedd, are still to be seen.
Llanbadarn Fawr has a celebrated tympanum, which with its porch form the only Norman work, that can unmistakably be pointed out as such, now existing within the shire.
