Boker's address and the emotion it excited were as hearty and as genuine as that with which he was received. A succession of toasts to his health and prosperity having been drunk, the chairman, Mr. McMichael, announced that a distin- guished member of the Cabinet of the President of the United States was present, as were also two most eminent Senators ; declining to enter into any eulogy of these gentlemen, he proposed the health of General George M. Robeson, Secretary of the IN^avy. Thus intro...duced the Secretary said : — My friends and fellow members of the Union League, of Philadelphia — I thank you for the kindness of the sentiment which your President has given, and for the manner in which you have received it. Representing here to-night, in some sort, the Executive of our !N^ation, who is at once the representative of our principles and the chief and leader of our party, I am proud to say, as an original member of the Union League, that the appointment of our friend, whom we are assembled to honor, richly deserved and nobly achieved as it has been by personal character and patriotic 41 service, was conferred also as a public recognition of the patriotic, national, and American spirit of your organization, an organization as valuable in action and in influence as any our country has ever known.
